Snow Day

June 4, 2008

We had a snow day here in Butte, Montana … yup, your calendar is correct – it is June – but as folks here are fond of telling me – we can get snow every month of the year and its not unusual to get some accumulation even in June. Not today, not here anyway.

It was lovely, though. Watching the heavy, wet snow falling through the city streets as I walked to the cafe for coffee and writing, to meetings, and home again. It was nice to spend most of the day at home – getting projects done, sending out pieces to different clients, getting great feedback for changes and great appreciation for what I’ve been doing, and watching the snow turn to rain turn to snow again.

Just after 5pm, I turned my attention to the kitchen to prepare for dinner with Jana. I’m continuing to enjoy the domestic side of life right now – the simplicity of chopping onions and garlic and placing them in one bowl, slicing mushroom and placing them into another bowl, rinsing the shrimp, collecting all the spices for curry, all waiting for the moment when I turn up the flame under the skillet. Cooking is soothing, and it brings me back to myself. The simple act of sharing the food I’ve cooked with loving attention is heartening.
